WEEK 14: Light and Interaction.

Date: 17th April, 2020.

In today’s class, our teacher gave a feedback on everyone’s three texture iterations and had asked us to upload the presentation pdf file on the drive which includes all the three texture’s iterations.

I had taken bamboo as my material, which has circular and linear texture and I had chosen a resort’s lobby wall as my hypothetical space.

I came up with three iterations using different materials.

Iteration I: MATERIALS USED- PUTTY, PAPER, THERMOCOL, PAINTS.

I used putty as I wanted to show the hardness that a bamboo has and also I wanted to show the circular texture that it has at the two ends by creating texture on putty. I have given a linear texture too in the background which is there in a bamboo. For the background, I have used thermocol and applied putty on it and gave a linear texture to it. I gave a colourful theme here as its designed for a resort and resorts are a happy place to be.

Iteration II: MATERIALS USED- TOOTHPICK, PAPER AND PAINTS.

I have used toothpick in my background to show the linear texture on bamboo and also again to show the hardness the bamboo has. I have also used paper for the circular texture as in this I wanted the linear texture background to stand out more. I have used brown and ochre to give a forest look as this wall is designed for forest’s resort.

Iteration III: MATERIALS USED- THERMOCOL, WOOL, GLUE GUN, PLASTIC AND PAINTS.

I used wool here because the circular texture on a bamboo is very fine and thin. I have used glue of a glue gun to give a glass texture for the background. I have used a tone of brown and ochre as I had a forest’s resort in my mind. Forests include wood, bamboo huts etc and they have this colour effect.

It was a fun learning project. I found each part of this assignment really interesting and at the same time I learned a lot too. I feel it is so important to observe nature and everything around us. Each and every specie and natural materials can inspire us in so many ways. At the same time it can be helpful too. Personally, I feel that we can play around with these textures and create amazing things. Bamboo being my material, I learned a lot about it. I gained a lot of information on it, mainly about its textures. I had chosen my materials that I would use based on bamboo’s characteristics. It was fun to make these three texture iterations too. I could imagine a wall that I have designed for real! Our teacher kept guiding us at every step which helped us a lot. I gained a lot through this project.

WEEK 13: Light and Interaction.

Date: 3rd April, 2020.

In today’s class, we talked to our teacher about the materials and the texture ideas that we had. Our teacher talked to each one of us individually and gave his feedback.

I came up with few texture ideas and with a material list. My material list includes:  Plastic, Fabric, Paper, Cardboard, Clay, Matchsticks, Thermocol, Toothpick and Putty. For my texture ideas, I had basically concentrated on the linear and circular texture that the bamboo has.

As I sketched down my texture ideas, I could get a clear picture as to how it would look on a resort’s lobby wall. I learnt how inspirations are derived.

WEEK 12: Light and Interaction.

Date: 27th March, 2020.

In today’s class, our teacher interacted with us individually on our material project. We discussed as to what material we had chosen, the textures it has and the hypothetical space we are planning to create the textures for.

I decided to take bamboo as my natural material. It is quite fascinating how bamboo can be used in various ways and how they look so amazing raw. Even if we use it as it is anywhere, it gives an amazing vibe and feel. So how fascinating would it be to play with its textures! After my research on bamboo, I came across its textures in detail. Bamboo has a linear texture all over and fine circular textures at its two ends. Being a monocot in the grass family, bamboo does not have any sapwood/heartwood or growth rings. Texture is very uniform, and ranges from medium to fine depending on density. Bamboo that has been split and processed into lumber will have intermittent variations in the fibre at each node on the stem.

I have decided to take a resort’s lobby as my hypothetical space. I have chosen this space because many of the resorts especially the resorts located in forests have a very natural looking interiors. They have animal skin textures, plant textures etc. I wanted to experiment with the texture of bamboo as there are various ways to show the texture of a bamboo which is quite interesting. I have decided to create textures for a wall using different materials and at last by casting lights from proper directions on it.

After giving feedback on our ideas and research, our teacher asked us to come up with our own texture ideas for the wall of a space that we had chosen and also the materials that we would be using for the three iterations.

I gained a lot of information on bamboo during this process and its so amazing to see how interior spaces can be designed so beautifully by taking inspiration from nature and animals.

WEEK 11: Light and Interaction

Date: 20th March, 2020

In today’s online class, our teacher asked us to show our  7 fabric work. We then interacted with our teacher individually to talk about our fabric textures and the given material assignment. We have now been asked to take inspiration from among 3 categories: Nature, Materials, animal/bird skin. After which we have to select any hypothetical space within which we have to include the inspired texture and that too  assuming a certain type of lighting condition. The space decides what kind of mood our texture creates along with the lighting. We can use any material to create the texture.

At first I had no idea how would these fabric textures that we had created would create a mood with the help of lighting, but when I tried I got to see some very interesting mood of lighting. It was fun to work with fabrics. I learned a lot from these fun assignments of creating textures.

The online class was really great too. It felt no different than in a class. I understood everything quite well and the instructions given were very clear.

Week 9: Light and Interaction.

Date: 6th March, 2020

In today’s class, we were asked to get the 20 textures that we had created from different papers in the previous class and we were also asked to get different types of fabrics. We then had to put up all our A3 sheets which consisted those 20 textures. Our teacher then talked about how differently these different textures would interact when a light is being cast. He also asked if we created those textures keeping wall, ceiling or any interior piece in mind which most of us did and then it made all the more sense.

We looked around and checked for most unique textures and casted lights on them from various sides and direction to  see which is best suited and interacts the best. Some of them looked really amazing.

We then did the same thing with our own 20 textures and noted down for each that in which direction would the light interact with the texture in the best way. Our teacher also asked to take pictures of them. I was really fascinated by how just playing with papers created such beautiful things with the help of light. We learned a lot through this activity.

After this exercise, our teacher talked about fabrics. How different fabrics and the textures created on them using buttons, threads etc, would interact with lights. We then discussed about how we could take inspiration from the nature and create textures from different materials. For example: Fruits like kiwi, mango steen, banana, orange, guava, strawberry and many more. We were asked to list down all the inspirations from nature to create textures.

For the next class, we are asked to get started with 7 textures of fabrics using buttons, threads etc and 3 textures of any possible material inspired from nature.

Week 8: Light and Interaction

Date: 28th February, 2020

In today’s class, we were asked to get different types of papers. Our teacher asked us to create different types of texture by using those papers. We could even combine different types of papers to create a texture. We had to keep in mind that whatever we made would interact best when the light is being cast upon it. We were basically asked to play with papers.

It was a light and a fun assignment through which we could learn a lot. We had to create 20 textures. At first I couldn’t figure out that how exactly it was supposed to be done but slowly I figured out and then it was fun to make.

We basically did this assignment to learn that how when lights are being cast on it, how different types of papers interact, For example, a crumbled paper would interact differently as compared to a plain paper. How an opaque and translucent would interact together.

We finished as many as we could in the class and then  our teacher asked to get 20 of them for the next class. It was really a fun learning activity.

Week 6: Light and Interaction

Date: 14th February, 2020

In today’s class, our teacher took us to the material lab. We had to look around and learn and categorize different types of materials as how how they interact with light. Different properties of materials were mixed together to form one material. I found that quite interesting.

We had to then categorize different materials based on glass, plastic, wood, ceramic, metal, concrete, coatings , natural stones and other naturals. The materials formed different textures and structures.

I gained a lot through this class, I learned how two opposite materials can together form one amazing material. It really surprised me and I learned a lot.

Week 5: Light and Interaction.

Date: 7th February, 2020

In today’s class, we had to research on materials which absorbs or reflects light. Few examples of absorption of light are: Coal, wood, cement and molten salt. The examples for reflection of light are: Mirror, foil, black paper, glass and polished metal.

Our teacher then talked about how when we place lights in different angles, it gives different effect and mood to the material and the space. He used various examples to explain us in a better manner.

We then showed our texture imprints and the material work of 3 different rooms and our teacher gave his inputs on each one of them.

The assignments are fun learning and I understand the topics better when we do it practically.

Week 4: Light and Interaction.

Date: 31st January, 2020

In today’s class, we displayed our 20 imprint textures that we were supposed to get from our home. Our teacher then talked about The Ronchamp chapel and The church of light. The way it is made and the thought put into it about the light transmission and diffusion is amazing.

We also learned about how light can change the mood of a certain place. Our teacher placed different materials at different angles from light and showed us how it changes the effect and the mood.

I learned a lot through these activities and assignments. I learned how light and the way it is placed matters so much and plays a very important role in interior spaces or any space for that matter.

Week 3: Light and Interaction.

Date: 24th January, 2020

In today’s class, we learned about texture. Texture is the appearance or feel of a surface. Textures can create variety and interest in a room.

There are two types of textures:

Tactile: texture you can feel by rubbing your hand over it.

Visual: texture that is not real.

We also learned how texture can communicate different feelings in a room and how texture affects the the visual size and colour of an object.

Our teacher then gave us an activity, in which we had to get 20 textures on A5 size paper from around the campus by using crayons. This way we got a lot of visual textures by the end of the class and we could discuss on it for a better understanding.

For the next class, we are supposed to get 40 textures and we have to take a print out of the room and use 7 textures in different places.
