Week 9: Light and Interaction.

Date: 6th March, 2020

In today’s class, we were asked to get the 20 textures that we had created from different papers in the previous class and we were also asked to get different types of fabrics. We then had to put up all our A3 sheets which consisted those 20 textures. Our teacher then talked about how differently these different textures would interact when a light is being cast. He also asked if we created those textures keeping wall, ceiling or any interior piece in mind which most of us did and then it made all the more sense.

We looked around and checked for most unique textures and casted lights on them from various sides and direction to  see which is best suited and interacts the best. Some of them looked really amazing.

We then did the same thing with our own 20 textures and noted down for each that in which direction would the light interact with the texture in the best way. Our teacher also asked to take pictures of them. I was really fascinated by how just playing with papers created such beautiful things with the help of light. We learned a lot through this activity.

After this exercise, our teacher talked about fabrics. How different fabrics and the textures created on them using buttons, threads etc, would interact with lights. We then discussed about how we could take inspiration from the nature and create textures from different materials. For example: Fruits like kiwi, mango steen, banana, orange, guava, strawberry and many more. We were asked to list down all the inspirations from nature to create textures.

For the next class, we are asked to get started with 7 textures of fabrics using buttons, threads etc and 3 textures of any possible material inspired from nature.
