e were supposed to pick an object from the Renaissance period and write a report on it. The topic which I chose was Renaissance Architecture and its Influence. Following is the report that I wrote:
Renaissance Architecture and its Influence.
The Renaissance period starts from the 14th century and comes to an end by the 17th century. It originated in Florence, Italy. It is a period which is considered to be a bridge between the Middle Ages and Modern history. The period is well known for European economic, political, artistic and cultural rebirth which promoted the rediscovery of philosophy, literature, and art. It is an era when art and architectural design returned to the Classical ideas of ancient Greece and Rome.
Before the Renaissance, Europe was dominated by asymmetrical and ornate Gothic architecture. Throughout the Renaissance, however, architects were highly inspired by the symmetrical and punctiliously proportioned buildings of Classical Greece and Rome.
Renaissance architecture is basically the European architecture in different regions which showcases a revival and development of some of the ancient Greek and Roman material culture.
The first architect of the Renaissance period is considered to be Filippo Brunelleschi.
One of the most important characteristics of Renaissance architecture was studying and mastering the particulars of the ancient Romans. But as the architecture developed, the style started becoming more ornamental and decorative with extensive use of domes, statuary, and cupolas.
On the contrary to the Classical period, where the proportion was the utmost factor of beauty, the Renaissance architecture had a balance between buildings and human proportions. The proportions resulted in easily comprehended space and mass. This concern about the proportion was the key factor which distinguished the Renaissance architecture from the complex Gothic style.
Features of Renaissance Buildings
Renaissance architecture still continues to influence today in a contemporary home. The common Palladian Window originated in Italy during the Renaissance period is one of the examples that shows the dominance of influence of Renaissance architecture. Some of the characteristic features of the era’s architecture, other than the Palladian Window, include the symmetric arrangement of windows and doors, square lintels, extensive use of columns of the classical orders and pilasters, triangular pediments, arches, domes and niches with sculpture.
Lasting Influences of Renaissance Architects
According to books by two Renaissance architects, a classical architectural approach spread throughout Europe.
One of the main lasting influences from Renaissance is the stairway safety inspired by the banisters designed by Vignola.
Andrea Palladio is one of the more influential persons in Renaissance than Vignola. ‘The Four Books of Architecture’ by Andrea Palladio describing his architecture from the 1500s is still counted among the finest examples of Renaissance design and architecture.
Even long after the Renaissance period came to an end, architects were inspired by many of Renaissance ideas. By the start of the twentieth century, American architects designed grand style homes that resembled palaces and villas from Renaissance Italy.
The Renaissance makes the knowledge of the ancient Greek and Roman architecture as had the Renaissance of Classical designs in the 15th and 16th centuries not happened, we would know very little about the ancient Greek and Roman architecture.
