In today’s class we had to make patterns on Gestalt’s theory which consists of Similarity, Proximity, Continuity, Closure and multi stability. We started working on the patterns in photo shop to get a better understanding on Gestalt theory. My teacher then taught me how to give alignment and get definite size of shapes in photo shop.

In the second half of the class, we were asked to use the pen tool and create a logo. I started figuring out as to how the tool is supposed to be used and could finally come up with the Google logo. Of course not a perfect one but somewhat like a Google logo.

Today’s class was really effective as we learned about a new tool in photo shop and came across it uses. Also by working on the patterns, I could understand the Gestalt’s theory in a better way.

As asked in the seminar class, we finished writing down the ten metaphors describing ourselves in the studio class. We finished noting down the metaphors in fifteen to twenty minutes. We were then given next ten minutes to draw thirty boxes each of four by four-inch.

We had to depict those metaphors by sketching in those boxes. We could use any black ink for this assignment, It was supposed to be abstract and this time we could use any shapes and lines. Our teacher asked us to do three sketches for each metaphor. So basically total of thirty sketches.

We are now supposed to convert any of the best ten 2D sketches into 3D form using file card paper as our assignment and will be marked on this assignment in our next studio class. Today’s studio class was really interesting as it was something different. Jotting down metaphors which would better describe us was great fun and sketching it out was all the way more interesting.

INTEGRATIVE SEMINAR:3

Date: 13 August, 2018
Today’s seminar class started with Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. The book talks about Gregor Samsa who wakes up from his troubled dreams and finds himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin. Initially, we discussed about the author and I got to know that Kafka is now an icon of twentieth century literature.

We highlighted the important parts in the story and our teacher discussed the character sketches and their significance. We jotted down points about how Samsa would have felt when transformed into an insect. Everybody gave their own inputs and ideas which gave us a better understanding.

We  were then asked to pen down ten metaphors which describes us as our assignment which would also help us in our studio class. It could be either related to any situation from the book or could be any other metaphor. We had a very fruitful discussion in today’s class which made me understand the story in a better manner.

How interesting it is to give a real life to a non living object? Yes, that is somewhat our class was all about today. In the previous class, we were supposed to draw thirty images on the various topics given. Today we had to give those 2D images, a 3D form using A4 sheets.

We all started our assignment with experiments and a lot of confusion but gradually, we figured out our way to 3D forms. We did a lot of craft work like cutting and pasting and tried our level best to make it look real and creative. The materials that we used in today’s class are: cutting mat, glue, scissors, paper-cutter, A4 sheets, scale and a pencil.

Our teacher marked the assignment that we did in our previous class and few of our 3D forms that we could complete today. Our today’s assignment is to complete all thirty 3D forms and get it for the next class.

Initially, I was very confused as to how I would convert such complicated 2D shapes into 3D but later as I figured out my work, I enjoyed doing my assignment as it was a fun learning experience.

In today’s class we had an exercise of what we did in the previous class. We were working on a particular image by using various tools and discovering different tools for few hours. Apart from working on tools like cutting, pasting, loop tool etc, I used spot healing tool today to remove spots from a face. I also adjusted its brightness, exposure, vibrant etc.

In the second half of the class, our teacher introduced us to Gestalt Theory. This theory is an attempt to understand the laws behind the ability to acquire and maintain meaningful perceptions. He made us understand this theory using various examples and also by taking an example from the view outside the window of our classroom. This helped us to understand better. He then discussed about five elements(i.e air, water, soil, fire and sky) and our next assignment is based on it.

Further, our teacher asked us to research more about Gestalt theory as today’s assignment to get a better understanding. I acquired a lot of knowledge from today’s class and learned new things like Gestalt theory and figured out new tools in Photoshop.

DRAWING-2

Date: 10th August, 2018

Today’s class started of with our teacher checking on our previous assignment. We were supposed to draw ten sketches of Mumbai streets. I was able to do only five of them. She gave us her inputs as to what we should improve according to her in the sketches we had drawn.

We had to form a group of four in today’s class, each one becoming a model at a time. We were supposed to sketch the models in less than ten minutes. We faced a lot of problem in getting the right body posture and facial expressions. Personally, I feel that I need to work a lot on human anatomy. In the second half of the class, our teacher introduced us to the method of scribbling or doodling and getting the texture. We again did the same models using the scribbling method. To bring out a better nuance and texture, she introduced us to many famous artists like: Desmond Doig, Maris Miranda, Prasant Miranda, Samir Biswas and Allen Shaw. She asked us to research on these artist and their different method of textures.

We were then supposed to doodle down the scenery outside our classroom window. I used almost the same textures to bring it out so my teacher had asked me to use different textures by referring to these famous artists. Our home assignment is to finish the previous left out sketches and also, do all of those ten sketches by using textures, scribbling or doodling method.

I learned a lot in today’s class. Especially, it was fun to do the scribbling and doodling part. Though I struggled a lot to bring out the model sketches, I had managed to portray the body posture. I realized that I need to work on human anatomy and the textures after today’s class.

On the day of Rakshabandhan, a fight with my brother would have ruined the day. I had to forcefully tie a rakhi and my grandmother and brother were making fun of my frowned face and no sooner did I receive a gift from him, it brought a huge smile on my face which made others happy too.

I had to dress-up as a bride on the day of my fancy dress competition. I did not speak a word that day before going to school because my mother had applied lipstick for me for the first time and I did not want it to go. Also, I cried a lot that day because my mother made me wear a dress which was not at all comfortable.

This picture depicts my happy childhood. I love dancing and it was the day of rakshabandhan, when I did not miss a chance to dance. Everyone was clapping and appreciating my dance and I am really thankful to my family who gave me such a beautiful childhood.

INTEGRATIVE SEMINAR-2

Date: 6th August, 2018

Today’s class was all the way more interesting. We discussed about self exploration which is a continuous process and where we try to find our own voice (i.e our opinion, identity, perception, beliefs, thoughts, assumptions, attitude and choices). Our teacher then shared stories from her life to make us understand in a better manner. She also shared a haiku with us by Tolstoy, “Happiness is an allegory, unhappiness a story.” This explains and conveys a lot in just one simple line.

As we were asked to collect five pictures from our life journey in the previous class, our today’s assignment was related to that. We had to observe any one image and describe a story behind it. The story could be in one line or in a small paragraph. It had to express our emotions at that moment and the exact story behind that particular picture. We all put our thinking caps on and tried to convey our story in the best way possible. Our teacher corrected whenever we went wrong and gave her inputs and suggestions to make it better.

Soon, our teacher shared stories and letters from a book by Lydia Davis which gave me a lot of inspiration and ideas. She had expressed so much in just few words. We had a lot of discussion which increased our depth of knowledge. Our assignment for today is to complete all five stories and get it for the next class along with the pictures and we would be told what to do further.

I learned about many new things in today’s class like the term “haiku” about which I had no idea before. Also, this assignment took me back to my childhood memories and re-live the moment.

Today’s drawing class started off with our teacher telling us about how our next fifteen weeks are going to be. We were told about submissions, works displays and things we require for our drawing class. In today’s assignment we had to draw anything which comes to our mind and were supposed to use charcoal sticks and newsprint papers. I drew a sketch depicting deforestation and how people cut trees to build tall buildings.

In the next half, we watched a documentary on cave paintings which inspired me a lot. Soon we were asked to take inspiration from the documentary and sketch out or doodle related to that. I drew camels and depicted animal hunting in those times. We were also told that by the end of fifteen weeks, we are supposed to show all of these assignments which we will be marked on.

We have got an assignment to visit ten public places and do a quick sketch spending five minutes on each sketch. Today’s class was my favorite as I love to draw and sketch. Also, I learned to use charcoal pencils better.

SPACE AND MATERIALTY-1

Date: 2nd August, 2018

Today’s Space and materiality class started with our workshop orientation. We were taken to the workshop full of tools and machines. The manager of the workshop introduced us to various hand tools (i.e hammer of all kinds, scales, vernier caliper, measuring tapes etc.); power tools (i.e drill machines, glue gun, cutting machine etc.) and various machines to cut thermocols, wood, plastic etc). He showed us how different materials can be cut through different machines. It was really invigorating to watch all of that causing great  enthusiasm and eagerness for me to work in that workshop and use the machines.

The manager also informed us about few rules and regulations which are to be followed while working in the workshop. We are supposed to wear shoes inside the workshop, hair tied, use hand gloves, masks and eye glasses to avoid any kind of injury. He also told us that there would be a group of people who will help us at all times in the workshop.

In the next half of the class, our teacher taught us about different materials and their uses. I learned that materials are divided into three categories-Linear,Planar and Granular. Linear consists of wires, thread and strings etc. ; Planar consists of glass, wood, tiles, marble, fabric, foil etc. and Granular consists of sand,POP, powder, glitter, sawdust, stones, pebbles etc. We discussed about its various uses and properties. We are asked to maintain an A3 mount board and stick various types of materials along with their names which would help us in further assignments and work. Soon, we had an introduction round where all of us introduced ourselves.

It was a fun learning class and I learned a lot and got to know about new things just in one class.
